When you're building more cars that what you're selling, where do you keep the unsold inventory? Shelby's Los Angeles Airport facility did not have sufficient space to store the unsold inventory of completed cars at the organization hit stried in the springtime.
'Regional Inventory' lots were implemented as geographically distributed storage locations for Shelby American's excess completed inventory. Finished cars were shipped from the airport facility to the a Regional Inventory lot. In most cases, these 'lots' were at FoMoCo assembly plants. This was a strategic move; by design, FoMoCo assembly plants had plenty of storage space, marshalling yards, and direct railroad access.
Dearborn was the last holding lot to be implemented. It appears that the shipping of cars inventories at the Dearborn lot (assembly plant) was handled by E+L Transport. We're not sure if "L.A. Dist." (Los Angeles District) and "Pico Rivera" are the same, or two different lot locations. We have the same question regarding "Wixom" and "Dearborn." On a much smaller scale, this Regional Inventory approach appears to have been used during '66 model year. We find references to 'Wixom' in May 1966.
