The Z prefix added to Shelby VIN plates appears to have started with cars 'completed' by Shelby American from April 27, 1967 through the end of '67 model year production. It appears that the added 'Z' on some cars' VIN plates may have been formed by multiple strikes of a flatblade screwdriver, possibly indicating that the regular stamp was misplaced for a few days. As of January 2026, the SRG has cataloged a total of 11 cars that wear a VIN plate with an improvised Z. All of them are painted either Red or Acapulco Blue. Note: The regular 'Z' stamp character font appears to be taken from the kit (same height) used for the secondary Shelby VIN that was stamped to the passenger side apron next to the shock tower. Greg Kolasa's observation.
